GP Training
Khartoum to Cardiff: a rural GP training post that changed my life
Dr H · Sudan → Cardiff and Vale
The timeline
PLAB to GMC: 10 months. Two years of A&E and Acute Medicine SHO posts. Got offered GP ST1 in a rural Welsh practice 40 miles from Cardiff. Now in ST3, planning to stay in that village forever.
Biggest challenge
The pay drop from a London locum to a Welsh GP trainee was painful. But the quality of life — clean air, no rent crisis, patients who bring you eggs — is something money cannot buy.
Advice for IMGs
Look at non-London and non-South-East deaneries. Wales, North East, and Northern Ireland have less competition and better lifestyle.
